It’s autumn, so this means a whole new season of anime to check out.
Of course, this 2013 anime lineup has A LOT of shows. An avid viewer of anime needs to weed out the good from the bad, just like they would for any TV sitcom out there.
I have checked out the first episodes of random anime series for this fall, and below are my various thoughts with a guideline of my opinions.
Of course, you have to take these ratings with a grain of salt. I put a lot of emphasis toward first-episode impressions. With so many shows in any given anime season, having the viewer hooked enough to keep watching a series is important. After all, if one anime show will not get your attention, another one is bound to catch your interest.
1 = Just terrible. An anime with this rating makes me question humanity, and I feel sorry for all the money wasted toward animating this piece of garbage.
2 = Lackluster. An anime with this rating misses the mark on many levels. It is better than trash tier, but the anime is still crappy in some fashion.
3 = Average. Lots of anime fall into the “OK” category by default, but some do not excel enough to stand out from the crowd.
4 = Great. An anime that strives for “oomph” is always a treat because it went the extra mile to be more than ordinary.
One of those “twisted” anime stories. Very intriguing. I want to see what happens next.
One of those “magical shows.” It could end up really cool.
So this is an anime about middle school kids from the sea who go to school on land. Take note that the “underwater people” look just like normal humans, minus the fact that their skin is lighter than other people. They can breathe in the water and all that jazz (why don’t they have gills or anything?).
It tries to play up on the fact that there is some discrimination and prejudice from the people who live on land and those who live underwater, but meh. I think the part that annoys me about this anime is how the main dude is a complete punk and totally mean to the Manaka girl.
Also, how can fire burn underwater? Why, anime, why?!
Nonetheless, the artwork is very stylish. It’s a promising title, but I don’t have high hopes for it.
I love romantic, shoujo anime. This first episode was so funny and cute to me.
Shounen battle anime. The first episode was all right, but it screams “so standard” to me.
Initial Impression of First Episode: 3/5
This is an anime that has a “Sword Art Online” vibe, but with a very different approach to the concept.
It’s an anime about gamers who get “trapped” in their online video game. Like, imagine if someone you knew was playing World of Warcraft and then had to “live” in the world. They would have to play out their characters and whatnot.
If you are an RPG/gaming fan, you might get a real kick out of this.
Initial Impression of First Episode: 4/5
It’s a story centered around romance and music. This definitely has a lot of potential to be a heartwarming, sweet tale.
Do you like baseball?
If so, this anime might be for you, but I doubt it will ever surpass the excellence of “Major.”
Initial Impression of First Episode: 3/5
A pop idol wants to become a pro wrestler. Sounds goofy, right? Well, it is.
No surprise, but there is a lot of fan service mixed in with the pro wrestling.
Initial Impression of First Episode: 3/5 (Part of me is being generous here because I used to be a huge fan of pro wrestling when I was younger.)
I hate this show and everyone who had any part in its creation.
Girls. Horses. Jousting.
This has the makings of a solid, if not great, story.
Shounen battle genre. With dolls and other fantasy creatures.
An anime about bicycle riding. I am intrigued, but I wonder how long they can ride with this plot device before it gets annoying.
Well, to this anime’s credit, the artwork is very pretty.
It’s one of those “slice of life” shows that has “cute girls doing cute things” … only, this time, it takes place in the Japanese countryside. As you can expect, there is not much to do in the Japanese countryside.
Does this sound riveting?
If the viewer got a quarter every time the anime mentioned the word “kiri” for fog (霧) …
Honestly, the anime is about naval battles with ships and submarines, with the twist being the artificial intelligence programs on the special ships are humanoid girls. Part of me thinks the show would be rather stale without the “mental model” characters, but I digress.
I am on the fence about this one.
Again. Shounen. Battle. Genre.
Geez, that was a lot of anime to go through. And I haven’t even seen every anime show this season either …
And again, please note these are just my impressions based on the first episodes alone. Some shows take a bit of time before they pick up the pace and really get their respective stories going. However, I don’t continue to watch shows if I think they are not worth the effort. Better anime titles will always exist if you look hard enough.
Based on what I have seen so far, this fall season looks like it will be quite solid as far as quality goes.
Do you have a favorite anime title for this fall season already?
